Cemetery Locations

Outside of the Dawson Creek City Limits

file name: cemetery locations.doc

MS Word 2000

NOTES:

The distances were taken from a car odometer, and as such are not very accurate. Use as a general guide only.

The possession of a GPS unit and a cell-phone, while trying to locate these cemeteries is suggested. These back roads can be confusing!

--- Use your "Trip Indicator" in the car ---

The coordinates were recorded using a Magellan model 315, hand-held GPS unit.

The rated accuracy of this unit is about 25 meters.

BRIAR RIDGE CEMETERY CFID 49

55º 47' 18" N - 120º 01' 02" W

Contact: Marilyn Newby 250 786-5681

From the Dawson Creek Traffic Circle, go east on highway 49 for 13.8 Km. Turn left onto Road 201; this is the first road west of the Alberta border.

Go up Road for 2.2 Km., cemetery is on the left.

This is a very small cemetery.

Do not confuse this cemetery with the Pouce Coupe Municipal cemetery, also called Riverview, which is located on Briar Ridge Road, just south-east of Pouce Coupe.

CLAYHURST CEMETERY CFID 86

56º 10' 47" N - 120º 00' 16" W

Contact: Mavis Nelson 250 781-3354

From the Dawson Creek Traffic Circle; go east on Hwy 49 for 5.1 Km., turn left (north) onto Rolla Road,

(Road 3). Go north for 60.4 Km., to a junction.

Between highway 49 & the junction, you will go over two bridges. The first bridge is over the Peace River. At the end of the Peace River bridge, go right and over another, smaller, bridge. Go up the long, twisting, road.

The junction is about 11 km., from the north end of the Peace River bridge.

Note, the bridge approaches on both sides of the Peace River have the potential of being dangerous, drive with care, these roads have 'attitude'. At the junction, which is the junction of Road 110 (Clayhurst Road) and Road 111, there is a highway maintenance yard on the right (east). Also note across the road, to the left, there is a sign saying "Cemetery", pointing to the right. Turn right (east) onto Road 111, for 1.6 Km., to road 201. Note here another sign saying "Graveyard" and pointing right (south).

Turn right onto Road 201, go 0.9 Km., cemetery is on the right (west) side.

GUNDY-HAYS CEMETERY ( This cemetery is in Alberta. ) **

55º 37' 17" N - 120º 00' 02" W (See below ** )

Contact: Bob & Ruby Sipe 250 786-5318

Go south on Highway 2 towards Grande Prairie.

From the traffic light in Pouce Coupe, go 14.8 Km., turn left (east) onto Road 197. (road 197 is a little south of road 198). Go about 0.8 Km., to Junction. This is the old Highway. Turn left (north) and go 1.6 Km., to Gundy Road. Turn right (east); go 5.6 Km., to another junction. Tupper is to right and Gundy is to the left. Go left onto Road 201.Go 2.4 Km., (note, don't take an earlier right branch at 0.9 Km., which is Rd 198),

follow road to right and up the hill (do not continue north onto road that says "No Through Road").

Go 0.5 Km., up the hill; cemetery is on right (south) side).

** There is a provincial boundary cairn at the west fence line; number 76-7.

According to Neil Stables, this cairn is at: 55º 37' 14.5575" N - 119º - 59' 59.7884" W

The above discrepancy in coordinates is due to the lack of precision of my inexpensive hand-held GPS unit.

Cell Phone service is available here.

Note, this cemetery may be difficult to locate; roads and signage are most confusing.

The below directions seem to be the least difficult to follow.

From junction of Alaska Highway & Hart Highway, go up Alaska highway for 11.2 Km; turn left onto Road 214. Go 15.1 Km., to a junction.

The north bound road is called Road 7, also called Parkland Road.

The road coming up from the South is called Road 247.

Also note; at this junction, Road 214 is also called Mansion Road.

Turn right (north), go 0.1 Km., cemetery is on left.

Note: Road signage is confusing, at least to me.

The above road 247,south bound, does come out onto the Hart highway, but I've not followed this route south. Use at your own risk.
