History is Where You Stand

Part 11: Health Care

Of all the problems and fears faced by the early settlers, the almost complete lack of health care was probably the most worrying. A shelter could always be built and food could always be grown or hunted. But a child's sickness or a difficult birth or an accident could easily become a family tragedy. In the absense of doctors and hospitals, people had to rely on their neighbours and many pioneer women owed their lives to native women skilled in simple healing methods. It was not until the early 1920's that the first Red Cross oupost hospital opened in Pouce Coupe and it was not unusual for women to make 100 mile trips in winter to have their babies in the new facility. The picture above dates from about 1974 and was taken in St. Joseph's Hospital in Dawson Creek.
