BN10-12: SCIENCE STUDENT WINS PRIS/SCIENCE COUNCIL AWARD

South Peace Senior Secondary student Mark Taylor has received a $1,000 scholarship jointly awarded by the Peace Region Internet Society (PRIS) and the Peace Liard Science Council.

Taylor plans to attend the University of Alberta to study science and then to complete a degree in medicine.

Scholarship committee chair and PRIS director Jerry Kennedy said the scholarship is part of the society’s serving a broader purpose than providing affordable local internet access

"We try to encourage the use of electronic data transfer to stimulate communication, education, business, and technology throughout the Peace," he said.

By providing one annual scholarship to each of the five Peace country communities served by PRIS and the Science Council, PRIS hopes that more of the area’s young citizens will consider preparing for challenging careers in the computer, science, and technology fields, Kennedy said.

He said PRIS shares these goals with the Peace Liard Science Council, the co-sponsors of the award.
