10-28: NORTH DAWSON SCHOOL

The first North Dawson School was held in log building which Pete Hyndman had built for a chicken-house. The first teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Clarke. On the register for that first year term of 1922-23, were 9 pupils -- 6 boys and 3 girls. Some attending were Laura Crack, Ted Crack, Blackstock children, Hyndman boys and a little Russian girl named Annie(?). Pete Hyndman built this log building for a chicken-house but this place was never used for chickens. This little school had an old tin-heater set in a box-like affair filled with ashes. If the wind blew hard, occasionally the stovepipes fell down. There was a blackboard about 6 ft. by 4 ft. A small window at each side. Tarpaper covered the outside of the door. Mr. Hyndman was one of the school trustees. Whenever the stovepipes fell down, Mrs. Clarke would send one of the children to get him to come and fix the stovepipe, which he always did. Later there was a new North Dawson School built from lumber on the south quarter of Pete Hyndman’s land.
